World’s Largest Cooling System Activated at Grand Mosque for Hajj 1446

Saudi Arabia has introduced the world’s biggest cooling system for the Grand Mosque in Makkah to help millions of pilgrims cope with intense summer heat. As Hajj is getting near the year 1446 Hijri, this project shows what can be done in air purification and climate control. The newly renovated area allows pilgrims to do their rituals in a cleaner, cooler, and healthier setting.
A Technological Marvel in the Heart of Makkah
Besides increasing its efficiency, the new cooling system brings an important practical change to the Grand Mosque. Since the system is able to hold 155,000 tons of water, it can adjust the climate within the mosque and also the added sections. Because of this, all pilgrims remain comfortable, especially during the hottest days in Makkah when it is above 45°C.
This system is especially noteworthy for being so big and efficient. The initiative is managed by the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, showing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to progress in service and infrastructure during Hajj.

Dual Station Operation: Al-Shamiya and Ajyad
There are only two main stations in the cooling network:
Al-Shamiya Station furnishes the system with 120,000 tons of cooling power. It is set in a way that reaches most areas of the Grand Mosque and its extra space.
• Ajyad Station: By supplying the system with 35,000 tons, it ensures that the mosque’s most congested parts get the proper regulation of the in-mall climate.
These stations combine to provide reliable cooling, so indoor temperatures are kept at 22°C and 24°C no matter what the weather is like outside.
Advanced Air Purification for a Healthier Hajj
Apart from keeping temperature ideal, the system comes equipped with one of the best air purification systems globally. Since the system can trap most dust and particles in the air, the mosque complex has clean and safe air circulation.
It becomes very important during Hajj, especially since so many people come together in small areas. If the air is clean, the chances of having respiratory diseases, heat stress, or getting airborne diseases are lower.
Continuously, purification units gather external warm air, cool it down, use multiple layers of filters, and then supply the air to all the halls and hallways.

Supporting a Seamless Pilgrimage Experience
Saudi Arabia has always worked on technologies that help make the pilgrimage better. This system is part of the project to bring advanced infrastructure to the Grand Mosque as more pilgrims come.
In April 2025, many are predicting that the Hajj will bring more than a million pilgrims, and this approach guarantees both safety and adequate facilities for them. Those making the pilgrimage, no matter their age or health, have an opportunity to worship without discomfort from heat or polluted air.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
As well as its performance, the design of the system focuses on saving energy. Advanced chillers and recycling are used, which cuts down on waste and saves energy. Such developments are supported by Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims for sustainable infrastructure and environmentally friendly growth.
High standards are preserved by skilled engineers who watch over the system all the time, making certain it works smoothly, even during very busy hours.
Reflecting the Kingdom’s Vision for Pilgrims
Such a large cooling system installation is much more than an achievement—it represents a firm commitment. It stands for the Kingdom’s commitment to making the pilgrimage experience better and comfortable for everyone.
While Saudi Arabia grows and upgrades its places, this cooling and purification system is a sign of hospitality, care for the community, and future-minded development.
Conclusion
As a result of the huge cooling system now working at the Grand Mosque, it is leading the way in hospitality and air quality worldwide. Besides meeting their physical wants, it also helps pilgrims by reducing difficulties brought by the environment. Since the Hajj season of 1446, Hijri has started, pilgrims can journey with confidence because of the Kingdom’s strong focus on their safety.
