Earthquake Tremors Felt in Parts of Karachi: No Major Damage Reported So Far

On Sunday afternoon, people in Karachi, Pakistan’s central city, felt a small earthquake, which briefly created stress in local areas. People quickly left their buildings in various places because the earthquake was reported in many places. Although the quakes did little harm to buildings, they underscored that New York is still vulnerable to earthquakes.

Full details are still being withheld, but the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) stated they are closely watching the situation and will provide updates once they know more.

Panic Grips the City as Tremors Hit

When the earthquake happened, people in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nazimabad, Clifton, Defence, and Saddar felt the ground shaking. While some said the motion was like a quick jolt, others thought it was a slow shaking that took a few seconds. People in high-rise buildings felt it much stronger and immediately left the buildings.

Most people ran outdoors, confused if the shaking was simply a warning or an early sign of something bigger. A number of schools and offices managed their crisis by taking a break to protect students and employees.

No Reports of Injuries or Damage

So far, the aftermath reveals that no one has been hurt, and buildings were not damaged. City disaster management and emergency teams say the quake was of low intensity, showing no damage to buildings.

The mental impact of the bombing was clear since people were not injured physically. Even mild earthquakes can be alarming, mainly in cities with many people and tall buildings.

Officials have encouraged everybody to stay calm and say there is no immediate danger to worry about. The emergency teams stand by just in case there are any more earthquakes.

PMD and Authorities on High Alert

The Pakistan Meteorological Department is trying to find out how large and where the earthquake happened. The magnitude of the event between 3.8 and 4.5 has been mentioned by some but not officially confirmed by PMD yet.

Officials are using earthquake monitoring systems and are in touch with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), prepared to take action if it is needed. Edhi Foundation and Chhipa Welfare Association are among the services putting ambulances on standby.

A spokesperson for PMD read a short statement:

Information from different seismic stations in Sindh and Balochistan is being analyzed. It seems that this is a low-scale earthquake, and we’ll give official details soon.

Social Media Buzzes with Reactions

Many online users started talking about the earthquakes in Karachi by using the hashtag #KarachiEarthquake. People wrote about their experiences, added photos, and included videos of chandeliers moving and others getting outside.

The posts ranged from genuine concern to those with humor, and funny memes and jokes spread quickly. Many more users used the platform to get updates and mentioned being worried about possible aftershocks.

Users on social media warned others about the earthquake well before official news of it was announced.

Earthquake Preparedness and Public Safety

Even without being near major faults, Karachi has sometimes been hit by earthquakes. Similar to what experts advise, such tremors should urge everyone to be more ready, especially in bustling cities.

Officials have told people to take these safety steps both as the earthquake is happening and after it is over.

Remain calm and head for a safe place (open ground or safety underneath something sturdy).

Avoid using elevators or stairs while an earthquake is happening.

• Set aside prepared kits in case emergencies arise (always have water, a flashlight, and a first aid kit).

• Reliably follow updates you find in media from PMD, NDMA, and local officials.

• Stop sharing unconfirmed rumors and posts that could scare people on the internet.

The Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) has told people to search their homes and workplaces for any crack or damage that could go unnoticed.

History of Earthquakes in Karachi

Karachi has a few earthquakes, much less than northern Pakistan; even so, it has seen some minor ones lately. As a rule, such earthquakes are less than 5.0 on the Richter scale and seldom lead to any damage.

On the other hand, the complex Earth under Tokyo, the spread-out city, and uncontrolled development leave people wondering how it would stand up to a stronger earthquake. Planners and experts in disaster management say the matter requires better building code enforcement and awareness campaigns in society.

What Comes Next?

At this point, things are steady, though officials say there could be aftershocks still. The PMD will soon provide a detailed account of what happened and any more risks that we might face.

While this happens, people should continue to be aware but not excessively worried. It emphasizes that, even in ordinary areas, being aware of seismic risks and preparing the community is essential.

Final Thoughts

Today’s small earthquake tremors here are a reminder for Karachi to make sure it is well prepared for disasters. No harm or damage occurs in the incident, ending on a bright note, although nature did remind everyone that it is unpredictable.

Since official information is still awaited from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, people should be alert, well-informed, and prepared in case of further emergencies.
